United Multi-Cultural Centre is one of the largest ethnic minority organisations in South Yorkshire and it has been at the forefront of engaging and providing support to the disadvantaged communities. And a powerful advocate for the last twenty-six years, UMCC is responsible for building the capacity of countless BME individuals over the years and solid foundations within Rotherham. UMCC has made a positive change in the community. It serves as being the first group, when in Rotherham in 1982; these were nothing for Asian Muslim women who were very much excluded. Its representatives sit on numerous boards and partnerships (Regional and National) to ensure ethnic needs are accurately represented. To deliver its services to the community the organisation works in partnership with Rotherham Borough Council, Rotherham Chamber Of Commerce PCT, South Yorkshire Police, Rotherham Life Long Learning Partnership VAR, VC Train, GROW, Rotherham Partnership, Neighbourhood Pathfinder, Sure Start, NHS Foundation, QED, National Sports Council. UMCC has attracted a very culturally diverse group of women from different ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds and of different ages, coming together to share the community aim of having a voice within the community and being apart of the decision-making process. The resource grew with the development of two organisations; All Pakistan Women’s Association and the Rotherham Multi-Cultural Centre. Following the merge if these two organisations the United Multi-Cultural Centre now helps and provides service around between 1,500 to 2,000 people a year with full and part-time staff of offering over 25 training courses, skills workshops, accredited academic qualifications and a range of family and children activities, sports activities, guidance and advice which combines fun with learning in a safe and secure environment. UMCC has a successful track record of working with hard to reach, disadvantaged women in the communities. The Centre plays an innovative role in the development of its courses and programmes. It is quick to recognise a need and develop programmes with funding bodies to address specific issues. As such UMCC works closely with a series of key funding bodies and agencies and had a very successful partnership, locally and nationally with the agencies and organisations. |
